27th Annual Balcones Heights Jazz Festival Adds Summer Concert, July 16
The 27th Annual Balcones Heights Jazz Festival has announced the addition of a Simmering Summer Jazz Concert July 16 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. to its year-long concert series.
This summer’s free concert will feature San Antonio’s Joe Posada Trio opening the show, with national headliners Nils and Johnny Britt performing at the Wonderland of the Americas Amphitheater in Balcones Heights.
“We are delighted to present a post-pandemic jazz concert this summer with an exceptional lineup of talented national and local artists in the beautiful and sparkling Wonderland Amphitheater,” said Lorenzo Nastasi, director of economic development and public affairs at the town of Balcones Heights. . “As we continue to plan for upcoming concerts with one in October and a repeat Christmas concert in December, we are looking to add new genres to help create a new series of music festivals.”
“With the reopening of businesses, we are excited to welcome food trucks and showcase our partners, sponsors and local suppliers,” said City of Balcones Heights Mayor Suzanne de Leon. “Bringing attention to Balcones Heights as a concert venue is so important, especially now that we are eager to bring the city back from the pandemic.”
Latin Grammy Award winner Joe Posada, originally from San Antonio, is one of the most famous recording artists and saxophonists in Tejano’s music. He is also recognized as a timeless singer, an accomplished songwriter and a seasoned lyricist. His group, the Joe Posada Trio, are renowned for their ability to energize, inspire and “dazzle” a wide range of music lovers with the fused sounds of Jazz and Tejano.
For more than a decade, guitar virtuoso Nils has been one of the most successful forces in the contemporary jazz genre. He fascinated audiences with his sound, producing hit after hit, with six No.1 Billboard hits, including “Pacific Coast Highway”, the most played song on smooth jazz radio since 2000. “His CD ‘Jazz Gems – The Best of Nils’ “has been hailed as” the best of contemporary jazz “for its masterfully composed and produced hits. As a songwriter and producer, he used his “Midas touch” to provide hits to many such artists, including Lisa Addeo, Georges benson, Brian Simpson, Reza Khan, Alvin Pope and Tony Saunders to name a few.
Johnny Britt is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer, trumpeter, arranger and songwriter. Founder of the Motown band MoJazz Impromp2, Britt is now a soloist and has just released his 4th solo album entitled “Mo Jazzin ‘”. Britt wrote three number one Billboard hits with Boney James – “Contact”, “The Total Experience” and “Grand Central” featuring Georges Duke. Now Boney has returned the favor to Britt with his single “You Sure Love To Ball” starring Boney James.
The youngest musical director of supergroup The Temptations, Britt was discovered by the legendary founder of The Temptations, Otis williams. This led to Britt becoming the music co-producer with Dan Carlin for the Emmy Award-winning miniseries “Temptations”. Britt was also featured as a solo trumpeter in the Oscar nominated film “La La Land”. Britt worked with a renowned composer Hans zimmer as a solo trumpeter in the Oscar nominated films “Hidden Figures” and “Dunkirk”.
In 2020, the Balcones Heights Jazz Festival transitioned from a summer concert season to a year-long concert series, which was adopted before the pandemic to spread concerts throughout the year. As live entertainment was halted due to COVID-19, the city of Balcones Heights hosted its first-ever virtual Christmas Jazz Festival in December 2020. It was produced and published online with local artists MiChelle Garibay- Carey and Zarabande. The 27th Balcones Heights Jazz Festival has been postponed to summer 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since 1994, the Balcones Heights Jazz Festival has captivated jazz fans in and around Texas with exceptional free programming in the relaxed, family atmosphere of the festival. Regulars or “jazz babies” take in their favorite spots along the glistening reflecting pool and fountains in the city’s main center, the Wonderland of the Americas.
David Muñoz, host of “Smooth Jazz San Antonio” on iHeart Radio, will host the one-year festival. It has hosted the Jazz Festival every year since the inception of the festival. Muñoz can now be heard talking about jazz and upcoming shows on the iHeart Radio app and on 101.9 FM in HD.
General admission is free for outdoor seating at the Wonderland of the Americas Amphitheater, 4522 Fredericksburg Rd. In Balcones Heights, Texas, and is first come, first served. Food trucks will be available.
