Colts Neck Band Announces Spring 2022 Concerts

The Colts Neck Community Band will perform at upcoming spring concerts on Thursday, May 19 in the auditorium at Colts Neck High School and at an outdoor show on Friday, June 3 in the Activity Barn at Thompson Park in Lincroft. Both shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Arrive early to sit inside the barn (chairs provided) or bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music under the stars.

For these concerts, the band is proud to present the exceptional vocal artistry of local legend Cheryl Parker. Parker has sung in most popular American music styles. Classically trained, she went from opera to Broadway cabaret, big band and jazz. Parker will bring Gershwin classics from The Great American Songbook to the public.

The band’s instrumental offerings will mix music from different styles and eras, offering something for everyone. On the program, “El Relicario” by José Padilla; the fiery and passionate “Persis” by James L. Hosay; “Theme and fugue of the Guide of the young person for the orchestra” of Benjamin Britten; and Genaro Codina’s “Zacatecas” Mexican patriotic march. Two beautiful pieces from Americana, the third movement of William Grant Still’s “Folk Suite” and a beloved group arrangement of “America, the Beautiful” will also be featured. Enjoy the peaceful beauty of Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium”, his reverent masterpiece for choir arranged for concert band; savor a medley of songs by Stephen Sondheim in honor of the late American composer; and sing along to a selection of songs from The Doors, among the most influential rock bands of the 1960s.

On Sunday, July 3, the band will join the Colts Neck Fourth of July celebration with a concert at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. The music will start before the fireworks and will continue during the show.

The Colts Neck Community Band has been hailed as one of the finest concert bands in the state of New Jersey and is under the direction of music director Kelly Tyma, with bandleaders Mel Chayette, David Crosby, Eric Robertshaw and Don Swinchosky. Admission to all concerts is free; donations are always appreciated. Visit ColtsNeckBand.org to learn more about the band, view the concert schedule, and sign up for the email newsletter.
