ECSU Welcomes Grammy Award-Winning Jazz Artist – Elizabeth City State University

Join Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) on Wednesday April 6 at 7:00 p.m. for the ECSU Jazz Festival 2022 with Grammy Award-winning artist Charles Singleton. The ECSU Jazz Festival will also include guest performances from the university’s Jazz Ensemble, the US Air Force Rhythm in Blue Jazz Ensemble and Singleton’s band. ranky tanky. The event is free and open to the public.

Singleton hails from Awendaw, SC who has shared the stage and/or worked with some of the world’s most talented artists including Bobby McFerrin, Ruby Dee, Jimmy Heath and Darius Rucker, to name a few. some.

He has performed in France, Great Britain, Scotland, Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Canada, the Netherlands and all over the United States. Singleton is a founding member of ranky tankya quintet that performs the sounds of Gullah from the southeast coast of the United States.

In 2017, ranky tanky reached the top of the Billboard, iTunes and Amazon Contemporary Jazz charts with his self-titled debut recording. In 2020, ranky tanky won a 62n/a Grammy Award for the release of their second album Good timewhich won the award for “Best Regional Roots Album”.

Singleton began his musical studies at the age of three on the piano. He then studied organ, violin, cello and trumpet throughout elementary, middle and high school. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from South Carolina State University. Since then, Singleton has taught music at the elementary, middle and high school levels, as well as an adjunct faculty member at the College of Charleston.
