Jazz Consortium celebrates 11 years of Big Band Music at Nellie’s June 12
A birthday cake and free raffles are in store, as the 17-piece Jazz Big Band Consortium celebrates its 11th anniversary of introducing Big Band jazz to the North West suburbs each month at Nellie’s Gastropub and Concert Hub from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. June 12.

Jazz Consortium bandleader Roy Vombrack commented: “In 11 years, so much has happened! We have overcome a fire at Nellie’s and the pandemic, and we are still here. We are privileged to have opened up local high school jazz bands. for us we played big band rarities as well as favorites, we had listeners, dancers. We created a fun but interesting atmosphere – you don’t need to whether you’re a thoroughbred ballroom dancer or a jazz specialist to enjoy our music. We’ll be featuring Benny Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing,” Maynard Ferguson’s “MacArthur Park,” and the band members’ original compositions in the same set.”
He continued, “And I want to say a big thank you to owners Mark and Jim Dolezal for taking a chance in 2011 and giving us a regular monthly ‘house’ to share our love of Big Band music with everyone. “
With a line-up of five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones and a rhythm section, the Jazz Consortium Big Band was founded in 1975 by music student friends in love with Big Band music. The band performed at clubs and concert halls across the Midwest, including the Chicago Jazz Festival. The band members have gone on to prolific professional careers in the studio and on stage with a wide range of artists and Big Band icons, including Tony Bennett, Maynard Ferguson, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Diana Ross and Frank.
