Man pleads guilty to trying to pay ICE agent to deport his wife
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man has pleaded guilty to bribery after he tried to pay a US immigration and customs officer to deport his ex-wife.
The Oregonian / OregonLive reports that Antonio Burgos, 48, pleaded guilty on Tuesday.
He initially faced three corruption charges in the US District Court in Portland.
Burgos first followed an officer from an ICE facility in Portland to a parking lot in Vancouver, Washington, where prosecutors said Burgos offered the agent money to deport the woman, from which he was divorcing.
The officer refused but called Burgos in cooperation with ICE investigators, who recorded two conversations in which prosecutors said Burgos offered $ 3,000 to remove the woman.
Prosecutors said he met the agent in person on June 26, increasing his offer to $ 4,000 to expel his wife and child from a previous relationship.
He will be sentenced in May.
