Comedian Jodie J Hill has entertained troupes in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, but one of her most memorable gigs took place at her shared home where she hosted a comedy show and sold martinis under the hood. stairs.

Comedian Jodie J Hill has worn many hats in her life, including touring with Armed Forces Entertainment as a host and MC to entertain troops in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

“It was a huge honor to entertain the troops, to spend time with them in the dining halls and to remind them of home,” Ms Hill said.

Now the comedian is a manager and auctioneer at SheSells Fairfield – a career move inspired by her father who had a real estate agency in South Australia.

Nath Valvo: Why the Melbourne comedian will rent forever

FIRST HOME

My first home was a four bedroom shared house in a beautifully renovated storefront in Fitzroy when I was in my twenties.

I lived with three other creatives from Adelaide and we hosted many jazz concerts, storytelling and poetry readings at home.

In 1996 we turned it into an official Fringe venue, where I performed my show Moving to Melbourne and Surviving – which ended up winning the festival’s Comedy Award and propelling my career.

We held it in the living room and got a liquor license to sell martinis under the stairs. Even our owner was present and loved it!

The house was amazing, it had a nice bathroom and a yard and it was right across from Fitzroy oval. We were thrilled to be able to rent something of this caliber…we loved this home and took good care of it.

CURRENT HOUSE

I live in Thornbury now with my two beautiful boys. We moved here in 2021 from Fairfield, straight out of lockdown. It is a large and beautiful Californian bungalow with three bedrooms.

My eldest, who is 16, has the biggest room. I love sitting on the porch with my banjo and I’m a little crazy about hedges – I got into topiary during lockdown so there’s a bit of that going on.

Thornbury has some fantastic cafes and shops and it’s a really nice community here.

DREAM HOUSE

I love a brutalist design, so something big, bad and modern like the Marsala House in Perth.

But I wish it was in Carlton near the Royal Exhibition Building – it’s Melbourne’s most romantic suburb. Something nice with a view and a spare bedroom for my kids when they are older would be the dream. There is nothing more chic than having a guest bedroom!
