Musical theatre, cabaret, jazz, dance and a tribute to Liza Minelli at Hamer Hall

Arts Center Melbourne has announced a full Morning Melodies programme, which will run from April to December this year.
The huge program of events includes performances by The Syncopators, Zoy Frangos, a hilarious tribute to Liza Minelli called Liza with a He!, a tribute to Burt Bacharach and a dazzling performance of tap dancing, vocals and live band, and much more.
The Arts Center Melbourne has been organizing Morning Melodies since 1985, with a single performance each month which takes place on Mondays at noon, between 11.30am and 1pm, in the beautiful Hamer Hall of the Arts Center Melbourne. A total of nine performances are taking place this year, starting on April 11 and ending on December 12.
With the diverse program still going strong for 35 years, the Morning Melodies idea has proven to be a resounding success, entertaining over half a million visitors to date. So without further ado, here’s our complete guide to every event happening this year.

Two Hits and a Ms
A tap show starring Christopher Horsey, Bobby Fox and Nicole Melloy, the trio will bring to life a comprehensive catalog of the most famous songs and tap dances in film and stage history. Along with the tap dancing thrills, it will also feature their vocal prowess alongside a live band.

Cutting edge: The Australian Ballet School
The Australian Ballet School is in place the following month in what has become an annual tradition, allowing viewers to witness the incredible talent and athleticism of the students in the fitting grandeur Hamer Hall.

Liza with a He!
The comedy highlight of the Morning Melodies program, internationally acclaimed drag performer Trevor Ashley will transform into Broadway superstar Liza Minelli for his tribute Liza with a He! Expect a tour de force of the classics: ‘I Have Confidence’, ‘Memory’, ‘Send in the Clowns’, ‘One Singular Sensation’ plus Minnelli’s masterpieces ‘Maybe This Time’. ‘Cabaret’ and ‘New York, New York’.

Zoy Francois: Variants
You may know Frangos for her work alongside Tina Arena in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical EVITA. He will now head to Hamer Hall with a new look at Australian bildungsroman: Variants. The son of a Greek migrant father and an Indigenous mother, Frangos teams up with a collective of First Nations singers for a performance that mixes a humorous and uplifting backstory with classic musical hits like “Bring Him Home,” “Jailhouse Rock” and the theme from The Godfather.

Victorian College of Arts – Musical theater showcase
On the first day of August, VCA graduate students will perform a set of everyone’s favorite songs: the best of the Broadway songbook. Exploring a genre loaded with hits for over 100 years, expect time-honoured classics from the golden age of theater intertwined with the latest blockbusters.

The Syncopators with Peter Gaudion and Yvette Johansson
Peter Gaudion, Yvette Johansson and the band will take the audience on a journey through jazz from the 1920s to the 1950s. Their set will be a time traveler’s guide to the golden age of jazz; a dive into the self-proclaimed inventor of jazz, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe ‘King’ Oliver, in the pre-rock ‘Jump-Jive’ era of Louis Prima and Louis Jordan, as well as female jazz icons Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

Victoria Orchestra
Orchestra Victoria Artistic Director Nicolette Fraillon and her orchestra are hosting a special performance for Morning Melodies, allowing the people of Melburn to see some of the state’s finest classical musicians in their own element.

Michael Cormick sings Bacharach
Burt Bacharach was one of the greatest songwriters of all time, responsible for classics like “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?”, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”, “There’s Always Something There to Remind Me”, “Say a Little Prayer”, “Near You” and “What the World Needs Right Now”. Acclaimed Australian theater actor Michael Cormick will portray the American legend as he performs audience favorites from the top 52 hits of Bacharach.

Christmas melodies
As Christmas has just passed, if you like to plan ahead, mark your calendar that in December we will see a series of special guests (to be confirmed closer to the date) announce in the spirit of Christmas with a concert of chants and songs with a large backing band.
