The return of live performances at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay begins in August. This year, Humphreys is celebrating 40 years of Concerts by the Bay.

It has been a long time since the 1,400-seat open-air theater on San Diego Bay, between the Humphreys Restaurant and the Humphreys Half Moon Inn in the 2200 and 2300 blocks of Shelter Island Drive, has not opened.

“The entire 2020 season was canceled in June 2020,” said Bobbi Brieske, advertising director for Bartell Hotels. “The season was supposed to start in April and end in October. We started pushing the shows from April / May / June to later in the season, but in mid-June we realized that no shows were going to be in 2020, so the entire season was canceled. The last concert at Humphreys took place on November 2, 2019. “

This year’s concert lineup picks up where the 2019 concert series left off.

“A few of these shows (The Cult, Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening, Michael Franti, Boz Scaggs, Judy Collins, Lost 80’s Live) were on sale for 2020 and have been rescheduled for this year,” Brieske noted.

Humphreys Concerts By The Bay began in 1982 with a few tables and chairs set up on the lawn. There was a small temporary stage set up for the summer. The lineup was mostly smooth jazz. Over the years, a permanent stage has been built, the seating area has grown, and the programming has become more inclusive of other genres such as rock, comedy, country, world and alternative music.

Typically running from April to October, Humphreys concerts now span the spectrum of entertainment, from rock and jazz to comedy, blues, folk and international music.

Dinner packages have been created which include dinner and premium seating for the concert. Then, a few years later, hotel and dinner packages were created which included dinner, a hotel room or suite, and high-end seating for the concert.

Regarding the sanitary protocols that will be in place when the concerts resume, Brieske said, “We will follow all guidelines in place on the date of the show. In addition, we will have hand sanitizing stations located throughout the site, high traffic areas will be cleaned and sanitized throughout the evening, guests will be able to order drinks from their phones for delivery to their headquarters, and the Most tickets will be mobile tickets which avoids touching hard tickets.

Maintenance was carried out as planned during the pandemic break while the concert hall was used as a beer garden during the long break.

“The pricing for shows is no different than in the past,” Brieske said.

Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.
