Shanghai’s jazz era continues at the New NJ Speakeasy
With the new year just beginning, many are ready to add some excitement to their lives. We all want to escape the pandemic that unfortunately still hangs over our heads. This idea of escape was the inspiration behind Shanghai Jazz Restaurant and Bar when it opened in Madison, New Jersey during the summer from 1995.
Last December, they hosted speakeasy bar Encore under the restaurant, drawing themes from Prohibition era. From live jazz performances to specialty drink menus and “secret openings” that require an access code to enter, you’re sure to feel transported back in time.
About Shanghai Jazz Restaurant and Bar
Martha Chang, the original co-owner of Shanghai Jazz, studied Shanghai in the 1920s during her doctoral program. It was a time when a variety of cultures flocked to the city. The reason was to escape from different global crises. Shanghai has been home to a multitude of different cuisines and music, further electrifying the Jazz Age.
For 22 years, Chang and David Niu ran the unique bar and restaurant. . The company was even named “Top 100 Jazz Clubs in the World” by Downbeat Magazine when she owned it. Eventually it was passed on to Thomas Donohoe. Donohoe is a chef with an 18-year career in some of the country’s top kitchens. Now under his control, Donohoe focused on providing an exquisite variety of dishes for his guests, coupled with entertaining live music.
A new NJ Speakeasy emerges: Encore Bar & Lounge
At Encore, located on the ground floor, bar-goers can try a number of specialty drinks that aren’t on the restaurant’s regular menu. Two of their most popular drinks are “Ginger Solo” or “Sexual Chocolate”, which is a version of an espresso martini with 90% cocoa chocolate and Black Sambuca.
Shanghai Jazz exudes the glamor and glitzy vibe of Shanghai in its jazz era. From its themed drinks and upbeat jazz music, speakeasy aficionados will instantly feel transported to the true “Paris of the Orient” during their stay at Encore.
Shanghai Jazz and Encore speakeasy bars are open Tuesday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Then, on Fridays and Saturdays, it is open until midnight.
