Singer Tony Hightower brings real jazz to the younger generation on sophomore project ‘Legacy’ Richly – The Durango Herald
ATLANTA, Ga, October 6, 2021 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) – Singer / songwriter Tony Hightower takes on the role of bridge that brings R&B audiences into Jazz – Real Jazz. With years of experience as a singer, drummer and actor (easily recognizable by his work in Tyler Perry movies / TV / theatrical productions), Hightower, originally from Atlanta, is still in his infancy.
His second project, “Legacy”, finds Hightower sure to switch from original compositions such as the soulful “All to the Good”, the alluring Brazilian bossa nova “Rendezvous” and the tender Al Jarreau-esque beg “I Need You” to swingin ‘covers of the classic “Can’t Hide Love” by Earth, Wind & Fire, a nasty boogie shuffle through Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” and a smoldering tiptoe through Andy Razaf’s standard of 1929 “Gee, Baby, Ain’t I Good To You” made famous in 1944 by
Tony’s greatest vocal hero, Nat “King” Cole.
“I had no choice but to make this music,” admits Hightower. “My mother, Theresa Hightower, lived her life on stage. She was a spirited and versatile vocal pro when she was 16 and had me when she was 19. So you can say that I play from the womb. Growing up under the guidance of a local legendary mother – a Funk-Rocker who could sing everything and mentored many singers behind her – Tony learned music firsthand from Bobby Blue Bland and the Platters at Mother’s Finest. And as a mother, Theresa evolved as a first-class singer – focusing on jazz, which earned her her historic residence at the Ritz Carlton hotel in once fiercely separated Buckhead. GA – likewise, Tony’s taste began to broaden.
“When my mom followed Freddy Cole to the Ritz Carlton he became a fan and then they became friends. Later Mr. Cole called to ask me to accompany him on drums. At that point he looked like more to a family. One day he said to me in earnest, ‘You have to start writing your own songs. We need new songs!’ I hesitated but with his nudge and God’s nudge I started on a few songs that worked, my hope was to create The New Standard, so the title / concept for my first CD.
A man of the Hip Hop / R & B generation, Tony is known to have sung with Soul luminaries such as Gerald Levert, Lionel Richie, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and OutKast. However, the past 7 years have found him totally devoted to jazz, on a mission to bring the real deal to fresh young audiences in memory of his mother and Mr. Freddy Cole, at whose funeral he tearfully blessed in singing. “I worked hard on my first record to make sure my tone was tight and my writing reflected the timeless songs of yesterday. On Legacy, my sound evolves into something more soulful and ‘me’ that I think the pure jazz world will respect, but who can also play in the soul-pop world like Al Jarreau did.
No statement could be truer when listening to Hightower’s latest divinely varied offering, Legacy, so titled in tribute to the memory of her mother who was honored with a proclamation from the city of Atlanta and on October 29 has been declared “Theresa Hightower Day” her passing. “My mom was my best friend,” Tony said quietly. “Before, we always had this one debate. I would say music is about melody. She insisted that it was all in the lyrics.
In a recent intimate performance on the Candlelight series at Piedmont Park, Hightower sang a repertoire from all of Ellington’s musical performances. On stage, he saw a pair of pretty ladies who could not have been more than 22 years old. His heart rejoiced. “When I say these things, I really mean them. My influences range from Mel Torme ‘and Marvin Gaye to Charlie Wilson (lead singer of The GAP Band) and Aaron Hall (lead singer of Guy), ”concludes Hightower. “I find ways of singing that make it all fit. This is what makes me unique as a jazz singer.
The CD “LEGACY” debuts on November 5, 2021
